May is Voter Registration Month!
Voter Registration Month
The month of May is officially Voter Registration Month in the Province of Saskatchewan!
An accurate, up-to-date voters list is fundamental to a successful election. It enables my office to prepare effectively, ensuring the right number of voting locations and workers. It benefits voters by providing a personalized Voter Information Card (VIC) with clear details on when and where to vote while also eliminating the need to register in person. And it supports those in registered political parties when they canvass cities and towns throughout the province.
Over the coming month, you may see social media ads promoting Voter Registration Month. We are also undertaking a number of smaller, more innovative “pilot projects” with groups that often have lower voter registration numbers, including First Nations communities and disabled voters, to see what we can do to improve coverage, currency and accuracy of the voters list. While Saskatchewan already has a strong level of registration overall, there are segments of the population where we can do better, and these pilot projects will help guide our efforts.
Our next scheduled general election is still more than two years away. By promoting Voter Registration Month throughout the election cycle, our goal is to ensure the voters list becomes progressively better and more complete as the election date draws nearer. While we are encouraging registration this May, you will likely see even greater efforts in May 2027 and May 2028. A key focus for this cycle is increasing the number of voters who provide a cell phone number or an email address along with their registration details. Having an additional method to contact voters strengthens our ability to serve them.
Over the coming month, I encourage you to share our voter registration message with your supporters and party members. We all benefit from improved voter registration coverage, and the result is a more efficient and well managed election for all of us.
